I am Verle LaFarra from McGehee,
Arkansas. I am a retired registered
nurse and probably an octogenarian,
whatever that means. My second
calling is a quilter.
I first learned to quilt at my Mother's
knees. She Made me learn. I rebelled
and hated it. While watching the ladies
who lived in the nursing home hand
quilting, I thought, 'You ought to help
them. Their hands aren't working too
good any more."
I tried it. Much to my surprise, the
stress just melted away. I thought,
"This is wonderful! I can do this."
Geneva Gates Quilt is named for one of
those ladies who lived in that nursing
home.
I found quilting with a hoop much easier than the traditional frame. You only have to quilt in
one direction. I prefer doing patchwork quilting like my Mother did; using old fashioned
patterns in brighter colored combinations. You never know how a quilt will turn out. It just
takes on a life of its own as you add, subtract and combine the fabrics. You don't want to
stop to cook and eat and never mind the threads and scraps on the floor. All that can wait.
